The Pros and Cons of Quitting Social Media

Some people aren’t bothered by social media. They can spend hours on social media and never feel overwhelmed, stressed, or out of sorts. Other people may feel overwhelmed, stressed out, and see a decline in their mental health within an hour of being on social media.

If you’re someone who is experiencing negative emotions from the prolonged use of social media then you may want to continue reading. Today I’m sharing some of the pros and cons of quitting social media so that you can choose to live happier and healthier with fewer online engagements.

Cons of Quitting Social Media

Below are just some of the disadvantages that you experience when you quit social media or commit to a short-term social media detox.

Increased Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)

No matter how hard you try, it seems social media is the place that friends and family post their latest news. You can try to stay in touch with long-distance connections via phone calls or text messages, but the news will be few and far between.

This means you’ll have to get comfortable with embracing the concept that you may not hear about a birth announcement, engagement, or something news from those who live further away when you quit social media.

Fewer Networking Opportunities

If you run a business or most of your networking requires marketing on the internet for your business, and you decide to quit social media, then you may have fewer networking opportunities. You’ll have to resort to different methods of engagement and advertising for your business.

This means you’ll miss out on the instant reward that networking for business on social media provides. You can gain business through other outlets, but social media has begun to take over the major parts of business networking and advertising as of late.

Pros of Quitting Social Media

There are a few pros of quitting social media that may just entice you to complete a social media detox or quit it altogether.

Get Better Sleep

Most of us spend far too many hours on our cell phones. You probably look at your phone before you go to bed. The phone is probably the first thing you look at when you wake up. When you share something on social media and receive little to no reactions or comments, you may start to feel like you don’t matter. Quitting social media will provide you with a chance to feel more confident. You’ll be enjoying your real life outside of the internet and engaging in real-life connections that boost your self-confidence higher than any social media post would do.

How to Quit Social Media

As a freelance writer and entrepreneur, social media is a huge part of my business world. Quitting social media for good is not a reasonable option for me. I can, however, quit social media for “fun”. I’ve started to slowly refrain from sharing too much of my personal life on social media and limited the time I spend scrolling the newsfeeds.

Removing the apps from your smartphone will be a great start to detoxing yourself from social media. You may eventually quit social media for good on the personal side and only post on your business page once you see all of the benefits that come from quitting social media.

If you’re uncertain about quitting social media for good, I invite you to take just two weeks off from the internet as a whole. Schedule your work out. Schedule the social media updates for your business. Uninstall the social media apps from your phone and make a schedule of things to do during this two-week social media detox.

Write down how you feel at the start, middle, and end of this time quitting social media. Evaluate how you feel and determine if quitting social media is something that makes sense for you. If you feel that your time away from social media has improved your mental health and relationship with the people closest to you, then perhaps it’s time to consider quitting social media for good.
